While DVDs are often touted as the way to deliver information—and they
are an excellent choice for many applications—there are times when CD-ROMs
make more sense.
When you’re not sure of a viewer’s equipment
Although DVDs are very common, they’re not as common as computers.
Computers are everywhere—from the cubical to the sales office to the
production floor—which means that you’re virtually assured of a viewer
having access to a CD-ROM player.
When interactivity is important
If you want a viewer to take a quiz or link to your Web site, CD-ROM
is a better choice. DVD can be used in both of these instances, but
their interactive elements are less robust and Web links often require
the user to download specialized software.
When you want to add additional graphic elements
Again, DVD is excellent for video, but less effective if you want to
move back and forth between video segments and, say, computer-generated
effects and graphics.
In addition, CD-ROMs offer excellent portability, durability and quality—just like DVDs.
